Mandarin Companion has published a collection of graded Chinese readings which there are adaptations of great classics of world's literature.
The key point of this series of books is to approach interesting readings with absorbing plots which allow readers into a "extensive" reading. In other words, readers must understand 98% of the words so that they can enjoy the book and at the same time the experience turns into a motivation to keep studying and they get good reading habits.
This type of readings allow students to observe vocabulary in different contexts , learn different meanings of the words, review grammatical structures etc.
Plot
The Prince and the Pauper (王子和穷孩子) is the adaptation of Mark Twain's tale "The Prince and the Pauper".
In a casual encounter, two almost identical kids, one a beggar and the other one rich, decide to switch lives.
The beggar, who is now living in the royal palace, has the constant fear that he will be discovered but the prince, who is now wearing rags, lives in the street having a hard life. The plot takes place in a fictional Chinese kingdom, in the city of 西京 (Xījīng).
The Prince and the Pauper (Chinese Graded Reader Level 1-300 Characters)-Mandarin Companion belongs to the first level of the serie (300 characters) and it is recommended for a pre-intermediate level. It can be used by those students who have completed The New Practical Chinese reader level 3 or the HSK level 3. The level of reading comprehension should be 94% or 95%.
