It is part of the Integrated Chinese, 4th Edition series, which consists of four volumes: this is Volume 1, the entry point to the series. Each volume is complemented by a Workbook and a Character Workbook, sold separately.

• Recommended level: beginner with no prior knowledge. Roughly equivalent to HSK 1 and much of HSK 2: the volume introduces around 300 new words and starts from scratch with pinyin, tones, radicals and numerals.
